WASHINGTON—Receiving an annual flu shot can reduce the likelihood of death and serious illness in adults and hospitalizations in children, according to U.S. surveillance data by the CDC presented at IDWeek 2019.
In the adult study, the CDC epidemiologists looked at more than 43,000 older adults hospitalized with influenza over five seasons and found that vaccination reduced the risk for severe outcomes by more than one-third, including death, pneumonia, ICU admission
and mechanical ventilation (abstract 898).
