New Scheduling of Recertification Deadlines for Initial Certificants

PTCB has changed the way we assign certification expiration dates to pharmacy technicians when they become certified for the first time. Effective April 21, 2014, newly certified pharmacy technicians (CPhTs) are assigned certification expiration dates two years from the last day of their initial certification months. For example, if a technician's initial certification date is May 15, 2014, his/her
certification expiration date will be May 31, 2016.

Is PTCB changing
expiration dates for existing CPhTs?

No, expiration dates for active CPhTs who became initially certified any time
before April 21, 2014 are not affected by this change.

Why make this change?
The change will facilitate the recertification application process for CPhTs and
allow PTCB to process recertification applications
continually during 12 months of the year. Before April 21, 2014, PTCB
automatically assigned one of three expiration dates to each
newly-certified technician (March 30, July 31, or November 30).
Shifting to monthly recertification processing is consistent with
PTCB’s continuous nationwide testing program available throughout the year at more
than 350 Pearson testing centers, including military bases, across the nation.

When will recertification applications be due?
As always, CPhTs should submit their applications to recertify at least 30
days before their expiration dates (by their 'renew-by' dates) to ensure
adequate time for processing. PTCB will accept a recertification
application up until the expiration date, but cannot guarantee an application
submitted after the renew-by date will be processed before the expiration
date. For example, if the certification expiration date is May 31,
2016, the application for recertification will be due by May 1, 2016 (the
renew-by date).
