Provider status would help bring faster relief to patients living with chronic pain

Days, weeks, months in pain seem like forever

After putting it off for years, Eileen finally broke down and got the knee replacement surgery that her physician had recommended for so long. Though she was a little afraid of surgery, she was looking forward to the pain relief it would bring. When that relief never came, Eileen’s orthopedic surgeon referred her to Scarlett Lynn-Hohmeier, PharmD, at Buderer Drug Company in Sandusky, OH.

Many area physicians and nurse practitioners who have exhausted their typical strategies to manage patients’ pain—whether the pain resulted from surgery, an injury or a terminal illness—often refer their patients to Lynn-Hohmeier for a consultation.

“It’s like medication therapy management (MTM) for pain,” said Lynn-Hohmeier, who practices at an independent pharmacy that offers compounding and dispensing services as well as Ohio’s first drug repository program (which allows nursing homes and wholesalers to donate unused medications for indigent patients).
