Joint Statement on Ivermectin Treatment of COVID-19 in Utah

Joint Statement on Ivermectin Treatment of COVID-19 in Utah
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 14, 2021
RE: Ivermectin Guidance
Over the last months, the amount of ivermectin dispensed in Utah pharmacies has increased. The FDA has cautioned about the potential risks of use of ivermectin for both prevention and treatment of COVID-191. In response to the increase in ivermectin use for prevention or treatment of COVID-19, the American Medical Association, American Pharmacist Association, and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists issued a joint statement strongly opposing the ordering, prescribing, or dispensing of ivermectin.
Additionally, the Utah Department of Health and the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food have issued caution for the use of ivermectin indicated for COVID-19. The FDA has not authorized or approved ivermectin for use in preventing or treating COVID-19 in humans or animals. Ivermectin is approved for human use in oral formulations to treat infections caused by parasitic worms and topical formulations to treat head lice and rosacea. Veterinary formulations are approved to treat certain internal and external parasites in livestock. Veterinary formulations are not indicated for any use in humans. The FDA emphasizes that taking large doses of ivermectin is dangerous.

UPhA Partners with TRC, Now Offering Pharmacy Technicians University & Pharmacist's Letter.

Update on using TRC subscriptions for Pharmacy Technician University and recent Utah Board of Pharmacy
The Utah Pharmacy Association has been working closely with the Utah State Board of Pharmacy on updates to their rule that would discontinue the PTU program. Over the last several months we have come up with a solution that will allow us to keep the program in place. There will be a few items that UPhA will work with the state board to do every year or two and this will allow the program to continue. We are hoping that the finalized language will be available this month or next at the State Board of Pharmacy Meeting. Part of these changes will include UPhA and PTU providing an update and meeting with the State Board of Pharmacy for continued approval each year. This will help suffice for the Board on making sure that only approved programs are available and allow a pathway for new programs to go through if they have a valid training program. The short answer to this all is that we will continue to use the PTU program and there should be little change to it from the pharmacy perspective.

PRESS RELEASE: DOH Releases New Pharmacy State-Wide Standing Order for Naloxone

December 9th, Salt Lake City, The Executive Director of the Utah Department of Health signed a statewide standing order allowing pharmacists to dispense naloxone, without a prior prescription, to anyone at increased risk of experiencing or witnessing an opioid overdose. Naloxone is a safe and legal drug that can reverse an heroin and prescription opioid overdoses by blocking the effects of opiates on the brain and restoring breathing in minutes.

During the 2016 General Legislative Session, Rep. Steve Eliason sponsored House Bill 240 Opiate Overdose Response Act, which passed authorizing the Utah Department of Commerce and UDOH to implement a standing prescription drug order to dispense naloxone.

Having this statewide standing order in place will increase access to naloxone for the public. Included in the link below is the actual standing order. You may go to naloxone.utah.gov to learn more and to voluntarily enroll as a pharmacy acting under the standing order.
