Due to ongoing and recent developments in the COVID-19 pandemic, the UPhA Board of Directors has made the very difficult decision to cancel its plans to meet in person at this year’s Convention and Expo at the Dixie Center in St George and focus on delivering professional education virtually through a new digital conference platform.

The 2020 UPhA Annual Convention and Expo will be held on two consecutive days – October 29 and 30 – and will include all the expert professional education and vendors you have come to expect throughout the UPhA’s Convention’s 129 year history.  READ MORE

Joint Statement on Medication Safety During Treatment of COVID-19 in Utah

April 27, 2020

The Utah Pharmacy Association (UPhA) and the Utah Society of Health-System Pharmacists (USHP) appreciate the work of every frontline worker during the COVID-19 pandemic. We represent the interests of the pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy interns of the state of Utah who have joined the fight against the novel coronavirus each day. As health care providers, we strive to provide our patients with the safest treatment and care possible.

UPhA and USHP support using a medication when clinical research demonstrates it is both safe and effective. While we are anxious to find an effective treatment for COVID-19, we recommend treatment with unproven medications be reserved for patients under the close supervision of a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are associated with serious adverse effects (i.e. fatal heart rhythms) thathave the potential to actually cause harm. Thus, they should be prescribed with extreme precaution and careful monitoring by the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

PRESS RELEASE: DOH Releases New Pharmacy State-Wide Standing Order for Naloxone

December 9th, Salt Lake City, The Executive Director of the Utah Department of Health signed a statewide standing order allowing pharmacists to dispense naloxone, without a prior prescription, to anyone at increased risk of experiencing or witnessing an opioid overdose. Naloxone is a safe and legal drug that can reverse an heroin and prescription opioid overdoses by blocking the effects of opiates on the brain and restoring breathing in minutes.

During the 2016 General Legislative Session, Rep. Steve Eliason sponsored House Bill 240 Opiate Overdose Response Act, which passed authorizing the Utah Department of Commerce and UDOH to implement a standing prescription drug order to dispense naloxone.

Having this statewide standing order in place will increase access to naloxone for the public. Included in the link below is the actual standing order. You may go to to learn more and to voluntarily enroll as a pharmacy acting under the standing order.
